Melanotan I (afamelanotide, [Nle4-D-Phe7]-α-MSH) is a potent, enzyme-resistant α-MSH analog that selectively activates the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R).
MC1R activation induces eumelanin synthesis via the cAMP/MITF/tyrosinase pathway, providing a model for studying UV-independent pigmentation.
Used in photoprotection research to investigate melanin-mediated protection against UV-induced DNA damage.
