Why Format and Storage Matter
Peptides are sensitive molecules, and the way they are packaged and stored has a direct effect on how stable they remain between production and use in the laboratory. A consistent receiving and storage routine protects the material you have already documented and paid for.
Lyophilized Powder as the Default Format
Most research peptides ship as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder. Lyophilization removes water, which improves stability during shipping and storage compared with a liquid form. The dry cake or powder is normally kept in a sealed vial until a researcher is ready to prepare a solution.
Vial Types and Seals
Vials are commonly clear or amber glass, sealed with a crimp cap and a pierceable septum. Amber glass helps limit light exposure for light-sensitive compounds. The seal quality matters for maintaining a dry, low-oxygen environment during storage.
Storage Conditions
- Store lyophilized peptides as specified on the COA, commonly refrigerated or frozen depending on the compound.
- Keep vials away from direct light and, where relevant, with a desiccant to control humidity.
- Avoid repeated temperature cycling; plan aliquots so you open a vial only when needed.
Reconstitution Basics
When a protocol calls for a solution, a researcher reconstitutes the peptide by adding a solvent of chosen purity and composition. The concentration is calculated from the labeled net mass and the target volume. Use sterile technique, prepare only what a study window requires, and store any prepared solution under the conditions noted for the specific compound.
Labeling and Traceability
Keep the lot number, net mass, and storage instruction with each vial. Linking a vial back to its COA lets a laboratory confirm purity and identity before the material enters an experiment. Good labeling is the simplest form of batch traceability.
